In graphic design, students will learn how to creatively work within common design constraints to conceive, plan, and execute designs that develop their visual communication skills. Some designs will be created in traditional art media, while others will be developed in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Students will analyze design choices made by successful companies to understand the complexities of branding and the subconscious impact design has on our life and choices. Projects vary based on the unique levels and interests of students, but may include an exploration of typography/font design, logos, package design, infographics, posters, book covers, textile design, and album covers. We will explore traditional media such as screen-printing, printmaking, monotype, and other 2D design media.

Beginning Graphic DesignThis course offers students an opportunity to explore and create visual symbols and images used in basic design and commercial art. Students will focus on the elements and principles of design and their application to graphic arts through such projects as designing logos, developing letters and alphabets, making posters and containers, and developing designs and layouts for publications and advertising. The class will also include the art of printmaking and explore techniques such as block printing, stamping, etc.

Advanced Graphic DesignThis course is intended for students motivated to expand their artistic skills in the area of design, and expands on skills learned in beginning graphic design. The course utilizes a variety of media from traditional to computer related. Students develop expressive technical and cognitive skills in the use of image design as a means of communicating ideas or information. Students are encouraged to find solutions to design challenges in real life and develop a portfolio.
