Concentration:
What is the central idea of your concentration? My concentration focuses on personal and universal hand symbols that explore how shapes and motions of hands can mean different things to different people.
How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea? You may refer to specific images as examples. One can easily see the practical use of hands in a literal sense; hands allow humans no restrictions. My concentration began with blind drawings of hands based on an emotion, where I then surveyed opinions on significance and formulated a background demonstrated in images 1, 2, and 3. Because of their blind origins, I started to think about distortion and what hands could like with imagination, similar to making shapes from clouds, which I explored in image 9. I explored projected hands, puppet hands and sewn hands to represent possibility - pockets of nail polish galaxies to exemplify the infinite opportunities hands give us, returning to no restrictions. As my concentration progressed, I honed in on my own personal interpretations to hands while maintaining a universal tie via American sign language. By using sign language symbols, I continue the universal meanings while concentrating more on what hands mean to me and my emotions at this time of my life: overwhelmed (image 11). I drew out sentences to create messages, creating windows into my thoughts like windows of opportunity. I further explore restriction by looking at how hands can restrict, while represent opportunity. |
