Concentration:
What is the central idea of your concentration?
My concentration has to do with identity and the idea of how we define ourselves versus how society defines us. I portray the struggle of trying to find your identity and the emotional strain that comes with the constant search for identity while battling the definitions given by others. How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea? You may refer to specific images as examples. My work demonstrates the complex intricacies of self identity through an examination of how people define themselves. I started by exploring shape, color, and form. Works # and # illustrate this by portraying the people with vibrant colors and defined shapes composed of only one or analogous colors. After, I started to explore the more subtle and complex ways people identify themselves. Works # and # explore how people define themselves as being a mixture of multiple aspects portrayed by using complementary colors. Other pieces like # and # moved on to show how others identify themselves based on their lifestyle and location. I tried to represent this with works featuring collaged landscapes or other cultural elements representing identity definition through a diverse mixture of colors and images. The characters who struggle with self identity lack collage, and are simply colored representing their simplistic attempts at self definition. My works feature a multitude of colors and images which represent the characters expressions of identity. |
