Ap Studio Art: DRAWING PORTFOLIO
Concentration:
What is the central idea of your concentration?
The central idea for my concentration is to explore society’s cultural standards of beauty through flowers and nature. Media and advertising in the modern world have created a social construct of what is considered to be beautiful, and through my concentration I question the social and cultural limitations that have been set. How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea? You may refer to specific images as examples. My concentration attempts to bring to light certain societal views that European features are the epitome of beauty. Through mixed media I portray flowers from different areas around the globe such as Africa, Latin America, North America, and Europe. I emphasize the idea that all flowers have beauty and are beautiful and unique by portraying them in a certain way. Flowers come from nature and people come from nature, yet we have set cultural limitations on the scope of what is considered beautiful for people. Much of my artwork is backed on wood board with the natural gradient of the wood showing through, emphasizing the idea that behind everything on Earth is nature. As my concentration progressed I began to incorporate human features mixed with the flowers. Additionally, I took flowers that could be considered “ugly” and portrayed them in a way that is still elegant and beautiful. |
