Concentration:
What is the central idea of your concentration?
This year I wanted to focus on my growing interest in the architectural world and the evolution of styles and fads that has always interested me. Through new technologies and techniques building has morphed from one time period to the next, creating a multitude of designs and many new eras in the art of structure. I wanted my work to show the select styles from Victorian to Modern and potentially futuristic scenes, from primitive to advanced understanding of structure and building. How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea? You may refer to specific images as examples. My concentration has three sections: layout, structural, and home life. Layouts consist of the pieces that work with how not only rooms and homes, but whole towns and cities are laid out including cities of the past and future. Here I explored the comparison of building and site planning, for example, a floor plan and a city plan. In my works focused on structure, I chose mediums like metal mesh to represent its great importance in supported building and the cross stitch technique for the strength that the X shape has. Structure and support are obvious necessities of constantly used buildings. I have always thought of metals as having great importance and in my mind, they are the element that makes so many fantastic structural feats possible I represented this through the use of the metal meshes. Lastly, I centered my visuals around housing because it is here that I mainly notice the most change in styles. For example, it is always so interesting to notice how an old Victorian and Modern chateau can be so completely different and yet both be comfortable homes (shown in images 8 and 9). |
