Concentration:
What is the central idea of your concentration? The central idea of my concentration is to portray modern subject matter in the style of Italian Renaissance religious art. I used this this juxtaposition to comment on what is idolized in modern society.
How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea? You may refer to specific images as examples. Though not religious myself, I have always been enamored by the techniques used by Italian Renaissance painters to relay religious idolization in their works. I challenged myself to incorporate the intense modeling and stylized composition specific to that era in my work. The goal of my concentration was to answer the question: what do we idolize in modern society in the way that religious figures were idolized in the Renaissance? In order to answer this question, I decided to make renaissance-style work about modern subjects, and choose my subjects based on themes I noticed in modern media. This lead to my use of modern figures and text to create the aesthetic of advertisements, such as the text in works 5, 6 and 11. It also lead to my depiction of the modern, generally beautiful women often seen in advertisements, in works 2, 7,8,10 1 and 12. To create the impression of renaissance art I used markers to add intense dimension to most of the skin tones, which can be seen in works 10,11 and 12. I used gold leaf because many renaissance works also include it. What I discovered through the completion of my work was that oftentimes advertising is the truest indicator of what a society values is advertising, specifically if it includes young, sexualized women. |
