Drawing and Painting classes at Redwood offer students the chance to work on technical skills with drawing and painting media, as well as develop a sense of their own expressive voice and creative intention. Students interested in pursuing this track typically take Art Explorations in the fall of their freshmen year and Drawing and Painting 1 in the spring. In subsequent years they may go on to the intermediate level, which is usually taught as a mixed class with levels 2-6 in it. Students may continue in the sequence for one or two years before taking AP Studio Art in the Drawing and Painting room with either the 2D Art and Design or Drawing exam.
In all levels, students are building their technical skill, while expanding their understanding of how to address big ideas through visual art. Drawing and Painting provides the opportunity for students to use art to consider their own experience and address complex ideas in new ways. Our curriculum is rooted in observation, practice, individual reflection, and group critique. Each unit aims to pair students' personal creative goals with the development of new skills, and engagement with the work of historic and contemporary art practices.

Drawing & Painting: Level 1In the semester following Art Exploration, students are introduced to a broad range of media and approaches in 2-D media. Projects are designed to help students practice the basics of composition, representation, and mark making. Students are also introduced to key movements from art history, and encouraged to develop an individual sense of expression through creative challenges.

Drawing & Painting Levels 2 - 3
Students build on their technical skills in drawing and painting media, while exploring new approaches and possibilities. Creative decision making, reflection and practice are emphasized in all projects. Influences from both history and contemporary art are explored as students continue to develop their own visual interests.
Drawing & Painting Levels 4-6
Students in higher level courses are expected to continue building on their technical skills while exploring content in deeper ways. Projects offer the chance to demonstrate individual interests and or approaches and students increasingly strengthen their understanding of what these interests and approaches can mean in a contemporary setting.
Honors Drawing & Painting Levels 2-3 and 4-5
This course is designed to meet the needs of the developing artist who is concerned with creating an individual voice in their chosen medium through the creation of an independently-produced portfolio. This course is especially suited for students wishing to pursue AP Studio Art Drawing or 2D Design, as works from this course may be used as part of a future AP Studio portfolio. Honors Drawing and Painting should be taken by students with a strong motivation and interest in drawing and painting. Students in Honors Drawing and Painting will balance the further development of technical skill and approach with the exploration of a theme that guides their creative expression through the year. Each semester, students will have prepared a portfolio of 5-8 completed projects that consider this theme, along with a sketchbook that shows shows the creative process and research involved in investigating this theme.
